WhAT IS
INTERVENTIONAL OPTOMETRY?
Interventional optometry is a more procedure-based, treatment-oriented model of eye care. It goes beyond traditional optometry’s emphasis on refraction, routine monitoring, and drops alone. It is more closely aligned with the therapeutic side of ophthalmology, using earlier intervention, advanced diagnostics, and in-office procedures to more directly change the course of disease. This can include using SLT instead of long-term drop therapy for glaucoma. It can also include offering laser floater treatment rather than defaulting to observation alone or surgical vitrectomy. It also includes using modern light therapies and procedures to treat the meibomian glands rather than relying only on long-term medication use. Much like interventional radiology grew out of diagnostic radiology, interventional optometry reflects the continued evolution of optometric practice into a more active treatment role.
